Site News #24: New Videos, Better Videos

Hi there graceful devs! Here’s what’s new in the garden…

Content Updates

It’s been a couple months since the last newsletter, so we’ve got a few new episodes to list! In case you missed them:

  • Safe Navigation Redux: A deep dive into the dos and don’ts of Ruby’s “safe navigation” operator.
  • Dependency Injection Isn’t Scary: A lot of digital ink has been spilled about dependency injection over the years, but in the final analysis it’s a big word for quick, small, and very useful tweak to your objects.
  • Filter Map in Ruby: A quickie video about not doing a job in two steps when you can do it in one!

Site Improvements

Efforts to give Graceful.Dev a modern, unique, and cohesive visual identity continue. After all these years, we finally have some professional-looking episode thumbnails / title cards! You can see an example above.

Behind the scenes I’ve continued tweaking the on-camera filming process to improve lighting, make the audio consistently great, minimize chromakeying artifacts, and so on. You would not believe how tricky it can be to minimize shadows onto a green screen!

I’ve also been making some more tweaks to how I record the code footage – mainly to eliminate visual editor “noise” and fill the maximum available space on screen so you don’t have to squint!

That’s all for this month. Stay graceful!
